  OUR MONTHLY BULLETIN                              2014

WE DID   -   WE ARE   -   WE WILL      WELCOME MEMBERS,  Welcome  to our last monthly meeting for  2014.

 

The year has been a good one for the branch once again, with our membership at 114, we have welcome some new members into our club, have had bus trips to Roxburgh, Catlins, Winton and Lawrence. We had a visit from some North Island Branches when they had a South Island bus tour, our Annual S.B.S. quiz was again successful, have had some very entertaining speakers, 2 very profitable sales tables, Theatre Group organised some outings, “Good Morning Vietnam” and “Mamma Mia”, “Topp Twins” and “Irish Rovers” .Movie Group have seen some good movies but little bit disappointing this year with the lack of good movies coming to our Readings Cinema, Walk Group going well with visits to some interesting places, Cards and Games afternoons are fun, cards do need some new players if you are interested please come along.

 

All in all a busy and productive year for our Branch and we look forward to seeing you at our first meeting next year.

Today’s Speaker is Rebecca Amundsen an Oral Heritage Recorder from the library

 

October Meeting was attended by 80 members and a visitor.

 

We had a minute silence for Lorriane Wills who passed away recently.

 

New badges where given to Jennifer Hay, Jill McCallum, Ray and Dianne Weir. Welcome to our club. Peter had a Thought for the day, a joke then spoke about the new Car Registration. June King spoke about getting your photo on your gold card. Peter then welcomed Nicki Kitson from C.A.B. Nicki left Hospice and began working part-time for C.A.B. 2 yrs ago. She is studying at Massey while working. She enjoys her work as the values match her own, and she is giving something back.

 

C.A.B. opened in 1969 in the cottage in Dee Street but has now moved to 97 Spey Street, a warm building, and people  can drop in make enquiries.

 

Management Committee of 10, with 40 volunteers and 2 paid staff .

 

They offer a free service, impartial and confidential service, with a legal service, go to the Library once a month, J.P. Saturday mornings, Consumer clinic, help with rates rebates, Financial advice, radio programme (96.4 FM) on Wednesday afternoons.

 

The have funding from the Community, and had 6198 enquires last year.

 

They are grateful for the support from Community Post, I.L.T., Cogs, Pak’n’save, Southern Trust, Community Southland, New World, Rotary, I.C.C. and Warehouse. They also have a Street day in March. The volunteers are given 6 wks training, then work with a mentor.

 

For the future they want to Continue their services, welcome new volunteers, and meet the challenge on the Internet.

 

Olive thanked Nicki for coming to speak to us, and gave her a token of our appreciation for her interesting talk.
